What is purpose of that ?_vti_cnf? folder that is automatically created (in Dreamweaver)? Is it safe to delete?

Not created by Dreamweaver but Microsoft FrontPage.

The _vti_cnf is a directory of configuration files which FrontPage uses to
publish your page and ensure that it is working correctly.
It's not required by Dreamweaver.

No, it's automatically created in FrontPage.

DW uses no such folders.

Thanks for the replies but I'm still confused. I do not have Front Page
installed but the sites I have created with DreamWeaver all include the
_vti_cnf folder. If Dreamweaver does not need or use it, why is it being
created?

Create a new local site in DW. Does it contain those folders? Perhaps they
are brought down from your host (hosts who provide FP Server Extensions will
often have those folders placed in each hosted account by default)?

I think that IIS may create those folders spontaneously. I have one site
(which I can't check at the moment to check) where I'll get rid of them
and they pop back up again. Nobody touches the site but me, and I never
use FP on anything. (I don't even have it.)

I have never seen IIS do that, Joe, although it may do when the folders are
created under inetpub, which I never do....

I just checked, and sure enough the _vti... folders are there. I deleted
them again; we'll see if they come back. Like I said, I've never, ever
touched this site or this server with FP; nobody but me does any work on
it; I use DW's FTP about 95% of the time. And, like you, I don't use an
inetpub directory on my system. I do notice, however, that the server
/is/ using inetpub as its document root.

So, somehow or other, I must be getting 'help' from IIS or something else
on the server.

Thanks for the information. I'm going to treat it as a bit of an annoyance and
ignore the folder and just leave it. I was thinking the same thing, that it is
being created by the server (I develop directly on a test box not locally on my
machine). Appreciate everyone's time. Have a Happy New Year.

Me thinks your server has FrontPage extensions turned on!
